Overdue & Lost Items, Fines & Fees

Overdue

Please click for updates on laptop availability and returning laptops.

Overdue Items

Items are considered overdue the day after the due date. Many items are automatically renewed once after the initial loan period. We will send a courtesy reminder to the email address in the library record two days before the due date if an item will not be renewed automatically. You may also sign in to your Library Account in OneSearch to check your due dates and renew items, if available.

Late Fees

Hourly and daily late fees are not charged for most items. Course Reserve and other high use items may be charged late fees when they are returned past their due date and time.

Reserve Items

  • $1.00 per hour per item for hour-based loans (2-hrs & 4-hrs)
  • $1.00 per day per item for day-based loans (24-hrs & 48-hrs)
  • Maximum Overdue Fee: $25.00 per item
  • Damaged Item Fee: varies depending upon the degree of damage to the book
  • Lost Item Fee: at least $60.00

Lost Items

Items are deemed lost 30 days after the due date. At that time, a lost item replacement fee is automatically charged, and a notice is sent to the email address in your library record.

Library Book & Media Collections

  • Lost Item Fee: at least $60.00

CSU+

  • Lost Item Fee: at least $90.00

ILLiad

  • Fees vary according to lending institution

In addition to the fee, you may incur a university-level block on services, such as library privileges and class registration.

The lost item replacement fee is automatically waived if the item is returned after the fee is charged. The replacement charge may also be waived if you provide an exact replacement copy of the lost item in new or excellent condition.

The lost item replacement fee is refundable if the item is returned within one year of payment.

Fee Payment

All library fines and fees are automatically uploaded to your Student Center within 48 hours. Payments may be made online through your Student Center, or in person at the Bursar's Office. The Library is unable to accept payments directly.

Once paid, fines and fees will be cleared from your library record within 24 business hours. To have your account cleared immediately, you may forward your payment receipt to circmail@sfsu.edu or show it at the Book Checkout & Pickup Desk.
