CSU+

CSU+ is a free interlibrary loan service students, faculty and staff may use to borrow books that are checked out or not available at the J. Paul Leonard Library from one of the 22 other campuses of the California State University. Books are usually delivered within 2-4 days. 

Using CSU+

OneSearch

You first need to login to OneSearch with your University ID and password to use CSU+. If a book or media item you’re searching for is not available at our Library but is available at other CSU libraries a link to “Request from CSU Libraries CSU+” will appear under "In the Library." 

What can be Requested

Books and other print material, as well as media may be be requested. Each CSU library may limit the specific items they lend, so in some cases OneSearch may allow CSU+ requests for items the owning library does not lend. If that occurs, please request the item through ILLiad.

Pickup

Most items are delivered in 2-4 days. You'll be notified when the item has arrived and is ready to be picked up at the Book Checkout & Pickup desk on the first floor. CSU+ books will be on the hold shelf for 7 days after delivery, after which they will be returned to the owning library if not picked up.

Loan Period

60 day loan period for most books, 30 day loan period for media and special case items.  No renewals.  $90 lost book fee.

CSU+ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

All 23 California State University (CSU) Libraries now participate in a unified online library management system branded OneSearch that enables easy discovery and lending of print books and media among the libraries. The resource sharing component of OneSearch, CSU+, replaces LINK+ as the first choice for obtaining books and media not owned at SF State.

Q: Why did the Leonard Library make this change?

A: The J. Paul Leonard Library joined with all the other California State University Libraries to create an expedited way of sharing CSU collections. Continuing with LINK+ would have required significant additional funding and staffing, and would not have provided the previous unmediated and intuitive user interface.

Q: How does this change impact my ability to borrow books from other libraries?

A: The impact should be minimal to SF State users. Our research shows that over 85% of all LINK+ requests could be filled by CSU member libraries. The Illiad service will still be available to request items not owned by other CSU libraries.

Q.: How can I continue to borrow books from public libraries and other academic libraries outside the CSU that continue to be members of LINK+?

  • Any California resident can continue to participate in LINK+ by becoming a member of San Francisco Public Library, make requests online, and request that the books be delivered to the Merced Branch at 155 Winston Drive, just across 19th Ave. from campus, or to the branch library closest to his/her home.
  • Many Bay Area public libraries (e.g., Alameda County, Berkeley, Hayward, Marin County, Oakland, San Mateo County) remain LINK+ members for those who may find it more convenient to request and pick up books at the public library near where they live.   • We can request books from any library through the Illiad service.

Q.: What does CSU+ continue to offer in the same way as LINK+:

  • Users request books or media with a couple of clicks.
  • The information about the book is automatically populated in the request.
  • Turnaround time for receipt of requested items continues to be 2-4 days.
  • Users receive email notification of the status of their requests and books and media borrowed through CSU+ are included in their library accounts.

Q.: What advantages does CSU+ offer over LINK+?

  • Books can now be borrowed for longer loan periods of 30 or 60 days instead of 21 days.
  • Media can also be borrowed.
  • By signing in to OneSearch, the information about the requestor is automatically populated.
  • There are no overdue fines or late fees.
  • Replacement charges for books that are lost or not returned reflect the actual replacement cost plus processing fee instead of $115 regardless of the cost of the book.
